Crew 904 took part in Last Frontier Council's first ever "In the Rough Weekend" Venturing Wilderness Survival Training . The training was conducted by Venturers from Crew 2058, Guthrie, OK.
Diamond H is 6500 acres of beautiful, pristine wilderness. There are one lane gravel (sharp rocks - watch for flat tires) roads, but we also drove through pastures. Driving, you say? Yes, it was Wilderness Survival, but because we had never been there, they wanted us to see as much of it as we could.
Friday night it POURED, and our tents ended up in what could have been a rice paddy, so after lots of card playing and movies and popcorn, our scouts camped on the headquarter's floor the first night. Saturday morning we hiked UP the road in the morning. It became obvious Crew 904 doesn't do a lot of backpacking. (We're going to work on that).
We got to the final campsite & made our own shelters for the night. Fish were caught, if not by us, & there were blackberries. (They will not let anyone starve)
Next morning we were told to break camp & move - yup, another storm was looming. We made it back to headquarters & took down still-dripping tents just in time. Scouts did a cool interactive Ethics Forum before lunch.
Now, you're probably thinking this doesn't sound like fun. (I haven't even mentioned the ticks yet.) But you're WRONG! Crew 904 wants to go back, wants to do a joint campout with 2058, wants to do more backpacking, wants to improve their skills. Water purification, emergency shelters, food gathering, weather, knots, first aid, building fires, leave no trace, and backpacking were covered during the weekend.
Plus LOTS of card games.
